Marital Counseling

A husband and wife came for counseling after 20 years of marriage. When asked what the problem was, the wife went into a passionate, painful tirade listing every problem they had ever had in the 20 years they had been married. She went on and on and on: neglect, lack of intimacy, emptiness, loneliness, feeling unloved and unlovable, an entire laundry list of unmet needs she had endured over the course of their marriage. Finally, after allowing this to go on for a sufficient length of time, the therapist got up, walked around the desk and, after asking the wife to stand, embraced and kissed her passionately as her husband watched with a raised eyebrow. The woman shut up and quietly sat down as though in a daze. The therapist turned to the husband and said, "This is what your wife needs at least three times a week. Can you do this?" The husband thought for a moment and replied, "Well, I can drop her off here on Mondays and Wednesdays, but on Fridays, I fish."

The first trout I ever caught on a fly rod was in downtown Cincinnati one of those Outdoor Shows in a swimming pool. Does that count? It sure did as a 10 year old! They had it filled with rainbows and everyone got a "fly rod" with some nappy old dry fly like a royal coachman or something attached to something bigger than 10lb test line. You got 5 minutes to catch your fish before the bell went off and I think it ran about $5 a shot. My dad went broke that day. As embarrassing as that is today, I learned some things about fishing. I'd bet I did it 10 times that day and after the first two or 3 sessions I started looking for specific flies that caught fish better than others. I would let people go ahead of me in line so I could always be one of the first ones out around the pool so I could get the best fly. Then!... I realized they bit better around the aerator so I always "fished" around that thing. I even realized that sometimes a little twitch on the fly made them hit better. All things I still do today in one form or another in my endless pursuit of the trout - Brett
